Wind technology

Wind turbine technologies could be gathered in two major categories, the Horizontal Axis Wind turbine (HAWT) and the Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT).
  • The HAWT category includes the Wind Turbines using 1,2,3 or more blades, the Darrieus type, the Bolée type (water pumping)…
  • The VAWT category includes Wind turbines such as the Savonius type, the Darrieus type, the Windside type…

  • In the mid to late 1990s, the configuration for utility-scale wind turbines began to stabilize around the three-bladed HAWT, upwind design. Such design is based on the windmill system which has limited efficiency (up to 40%) and high associated costs.
The common feature of all the above mentioned wind turbines, is the use of blades and rotational motion.
